| The arrival of the first humans |
The evidence of the first human presence on the Maltese islands comes from Skorba, Mgarr where one can find a substantial wall which is dated to 7000 years ago. However archaeologists think that this structure is too elaborate for people that had just settled on the island. Therefore men probably arrived on the Maltese islands even at an earlier date.

The first men to arrive on the island might not have settled immediately and they might have come here to collect and hunt occasionally. The clouds accumulating on a piece of land in the middle of the sea or birds crossing over from Sicily might have revealed the presence of our island to the first inhabitants. |
|
However it is difficult to document archaeologically these visits. In the Mediterranean, there is evidence of sailing dating to 8000 Before Christ. Archaeologists do not know exactly what sort of boats these prehistoric men used to cross to Malta by the sea. The earliest pottery found in the Maltese Islands is very similar to pottery found in Sicily and therefore one can safely assume that these prehistoric men arrived from Sicily. The early remains of these men show that they were a farming community.
