Introduction

It is reasonable to state that the Mediterranean Sea is not a barrier to communications but the medium through which men from different regions communicated between each other.

This connectivity was an essential ingredient in the distribution of farming techniques, for trade and for the political expansion of various empires.

The Maltese Islands with their strategic location in the middle of the Mediterranean have found themselves at the crossroads of maritime roots and they have been taken under the influences of many different powers and empires.
