Many people think that the bottom of the sea is flat and featureless – they could not be more wrong!
The seafloor has only really been studied in the last 50 years and today we actually know more about the surface of the Moon than the bottom of the ocean!
The reason is that the ocean is a difficult place to study, and the technology that allows us to investigate the seafloor in detail has only been developed recently.
The instruments that we have today allow us to observe a wonderfully diverse and rugged seascape, very similar to that on land.
