The IOI-Malta Operational Centre of the University of Malta has organised two innovative competitions on topics related to the sea for children and youngsters in two separate age groups: (Age 5-10) and (Age 11-16). The competitions are intended to attract further attention by the younger generations to the IOI-KIDS website (www.ioikids.net), and to provide an avenue for young authors to share their original works and projects with other kids in Malta and worldwide through the publishing on the IOI-KIDS dedicated pages.

The works accepted for this competition cover any topic related to the sea and the coast, and relate to: interesting articles, compilations, events or notes; interesting and/or unusual incidents; recent scientific or other discoveries; conservation issues; species of plants or animals; ecosystems or places of interest; people whose work is connected to the sea, and many other imaginative contributions.

This page takes you to the selected works which are organized in four categories. Enjoy viewing these interesting works prepared by very competent young authors.

“The IOI-Kids Best 2008 Project”
Works prepared under this category consist of instructive projects presented in different forms and with the following attributes:

• a write-up in the form of a lesson, an essay, poem or story, a web page, a database or collection that can be shared online, a set of notes on a selected topic, a PowerPoint presentation;
• focus on a theme that relates to the sea and/or the coast; and
• complemented with images (in the form of photos or drawings) and/or audio or video clips.

“The IOI-Kids Young Journalist Award 2008”
Works in this category consist of articles in the form of news items. The contributions were expected to have the following attributes:

• an original news item or report based on true facts;
• focus on a theme related to the sea and/or the coast;
• relate an issue or event that occurred in or relates to the Maltese Islands or the Mediterranean region; and
• combine with related images, drawings, audio or video clips.

In this category a small number of works were eligible, all coming from the age group 11-16.

“The IOI-Kids Best 2008 Video Award”
In order to recognize the higher level of skill and effort, the contributions in the form of video clips have been categorized as a separate group. The same criteria as those of the IOI-KIDS Best 2008 Project apply.

The decisions taken by the Selection Panel will be final.

This initiative forms part of and is supported by the Women, Youth & the Sea Programme of the International Ocean Institute (IOI).
